Today we began our south african adventure! Our group went into the township to the Ubuntu Foundation and saw the current, lasting affects that appartied has on the community. Apartheid, meaning separateness in Afrikaans was a system of legal racial segregation enforced by the National Party government in South Africa between 1948 and 1994. Banks, co-founder of Ubuntu, passionatly took us on a tour of the township. Giving us a taste of their culture, literally, each of us tasted sheep head. The people were welcoming and excited to see us, waving, smiling, and dancing to impress us. The people we suprising well dressed in leading designs such as Ed Hardy, Burberry, and Polo despite their horrible living conditions.”The family keeps the individual in an endless wheel of poverty, but at the same time polish the individual to the point where they far surpass any sense of decorum we have in the states,” stated Hurst Williamson. The townships surprised the most of us with the close proximity of “shacks” to houses and the well dressed people. We cant wait to begin working with this sexy community.
